Day spas
Alberta's two main urban centres, Calgary and Edmonton, have scores of spa facilities—both stand-alone and hotel based. And most of our smaller towns also have at least one day spa. At a day spa, you can book an individual treatment as well as half- and full-day packages. Although the majority of spa clients are women, this is fast changing as more men discover the health and cosmetic benefits of spa treatments. Both Calgary spas and Edmonton spas have men-only facilities.
Edmonton is a great place to visit in the summer, because there are tons of outdoor festivals running throughout June - end of August.
My favorite is the Fringe Theatre Festival, which runs in late August.
The shows are incredibly affordable (usually anywhere from $5-$12 a ticket) and most are of very high calibre.
Be sure to read the reviews before you attend a show--word of mouth buzz is pretty reliable.
There's all sorts of other ongoing free activities for kids during the Fringe Fest too--free outdoor shows for the kids, street performers, craft activities, etc.
It's the one time of year weather in Edmonton is pleasant (ie. comfortably cool and dry, as opposed to icy and bitterly cold...)
